Hi, I'm Arno!
I love the beautiful Tengwar script created by Tolkien for the world of Lord of the Rings.
Perhaps you do too, or perhaps you're looking for inspiration for your next tattoo?
Type a sentence or name in English and see it transcribed into Tengwar. Note the text is not translated, it is written using the Tengwar characters.
If you have some text in Elvish (Sindarin or Quenya) rather than English, select the appropriate mode in the Options panel.
Pick a font and tap the Share button to get a link to share with the world.

- If you type a single word, dictionary entries matching this word will be displayed. For example: love or hope. A few famous quotes are recognized as well. For example not all those or namarie or all we have to decide
- Upper case letters are transcribed the same as lowercase letters.
- Use the letter eth, ð, to indicate a "dh" sound, as in this, and the letter thorn, Þ, to indicate a "th" sound, as in theater. For a few common words, this happen automatically.
- If the text begins with an exclamation mark !, the Tengwar diacritics (tehtar) will be displayed in red. It's pretty.
- Numbers are transcribed in base-12, with the least significant digit first. To transcribe a number in base-10, precede it with a #. For example: 31415 = û¨ñòöñ (B12, 112, 212, 612, 112 = 1621B12) and #31415 = õ¨TñTôTñTóT (5, 1, 4, 1, 3 = 3141510)
- You can select and copy the text in Tengwar, and paste it in another application. If you apply a Tengwar font to the text, it will display correctly.
- The North American English pronunciation is used, as provided by the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. The pronunciation is displayed using IPA symbols.
- If a word is not in the dictionary, the word will be displayed in red and an approximate transcription will be attempted.
- Indicate long vowels with an acute or circumflex accent, or by doubling them. For example: yára, yâra or yaara hÍ~C7E(ancient). Use a grave accent for double-diacritics instead of a long-carrier, or upside-down "a". For example mìre tÔ7R (jewel)
- Diaeresis can be used to clarify the pronunciation for english speakers, but are ignored. For example: taurë (/to-ray/ = forest), yávië (= /yaa-vi-ay/ autumn).
- To indicate that a n should be transcribed with noldo g rather than nuumen 5, use ñ. For example ñúle (black arts).
- To indicate that a s should be transcribed with súlë 3 instead of silmë 8, use the letter thorn, Þ. For example: Þauron (Sauron, The Abhorred)
- Intra-word hyphens (i.e. "Gil-Galad") are not displayed in Tengwar. Instead, use a "." to transcribe a mark between words, e.g. "Gil.Galad": "xj%=xj#2"
